“Unofficial Rules” of Staying at a Hotel

Everybody gets excited for a weekend stay at a hotel!  The cleaning is done for you and you are usually being served upon your request! But there are a few unofficial “laws” that each guest needs to abide by when it comes to staying at hotels.

Don’t ever yell at the hotel staff. Public humiliation has never been in style and most likely never will be. Follow the golden rule and treat people the way you wish to be treated.

Don’t rummage around the minibar. Unless you are okay with paying extra fees, nine times out of ten those are not complimentary drinks/favors. The coffee station, however, is usually complimentary! Just be sure to ask the front desk what is and is not complementary when entering the room.

Do not, I repeat, do not touch the TV remote. Yes, hotels have an excellent cleaning staff, but cleaning the TV remote is probably the last thing they think about cleaning. Bring in your own hand sanitizer or other cleaning material and wipe it down real good – problem solved!

Peace and quiet are awesome, Don’t yell. Wasn’t your vacation supposed to be a good time away from home and the workforce ruckus? The other guests are probably trying to do the same thing. Yelling is definitely not the definition of peace and quiet. Yelling is considered an emergency situation.

Don’t sneak your pets in. I am as much of a dog lover as the next, but allergies are nothing to joke about and are beyond miserable. Look ahead of time to find out if your hotel is pet savvy. They will have the equipment to clean the room properly just in case another guest is allergic to pets.

Don’t leave jewelry out and about. For one, you will most likely forget where you put the jewelry because it is such a small item and it is not in the usual spot you put it at your home. Secondly, if you are staying multiple nights, the staff could have temptations to take something that would look valuable.

Suitcase on the floor/bed, a big no-no. It’s not like your neighbors, families, or your place where you know what is usually trafficked inside the house. Hotels have hundreds of thousands of different characters with different stories that come into their rooms. Be on the safe side and don’t put your belongings on the bed and especially the floor.

No towel souvenirs. You are not a fan of others stealing the items you paid for, why should you steal towels that are not rightful yours? Towels are a big expense and there is no reason to steal towels anyway.

So there you have it! Follow these unofficial “laws” and you will be rewarded for your good and honest deeds!
